Dear Druba,

Just earlier today, I held in my hands an exquisite Mayan basket with a cover that Cherie gave me many years ago—in which I now keep the flowers from my mother's funeral.  So this evening, I embarked on an attempt to reconnect with Cherie—and was stunned to learn of her passing.

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the entire family for the extraordinary care, hard work, and tender love that clearly went into creating her tribute movie. It reconnected me with her extraordinarily unique soul—someone who played a meaningful role in the unfolding of my own young adulthood.

Watching the tribute brought back the vivid memory of our first encounter—the remarkable sensitivity and unexpected compassion she extended to me, a perfect stranger. Years later, Cherie showed me her Bible—and shared how she sought to apply its teachings in her daily life. 

All in all, the tribute video reminded me of Cherie’s rare gift for seeing magic everywhere—literally from marveling at the stars in the sky to reveling in the people she touched.

I treasured every photo and every chapter of her life. One common thread stood out: her radiant smile for life. I truly wished the tribute would go on for hours—and never end. That bittersweet feeling lingered, echoing the quiet wish we all carry for lives that leave us too soon. 

Thank you for allowing us to reconnect with Cherie once again. The experience was truly cathartic and touching.

I met her as a receptionist working at her dental office.  She was truly one of my favorite patients, and we bonded over our love of jewelry! I still have the items she gifted me, a beautiful blue linen shift dress that she brought me from Mexico, as well as the last thing she gave me. It was literally the necklace that she had on her neck the last day that I saw her. It is a beautiful long necklace with colors.  I told her that it was gorgeous (as was all of her jewelry whenever I saw her!), and she simply pulled it over her head and gave it to me!❤️  God rest her beautiful soul, and I hope that her family takes comfort in the time that they had with this extraordinary person!

I met Cheri in 2013. We have Delhi's street dogs to thank for bringing us together. Someone had told her I help dogs on the street in Delhi  and given her my number. She called and I went to see her beloved street dog Lalu and that was it . Cheri's smile lit up my world. Always kind, always patient...even in the most trying of circumstances....and ever so generous. Sometimes she'd come along with me to help bandage the odd street dog. She was an animal whisperer. The dogs would calm down around her and she could sit in the dirt with not a care for her clothes and hold a sick puppy for half an hour in her lap. Her financial and physical support would always arrive right when we would be at breaking point. It's like she would just know. 
I loved how free Cheri was spiritually. She subscribed to everything and everyone with a childlike trust. Our favorite God to gift each other was Ganesha the adorable Elephant God who we both loved and attributed many miracles to. 
She was a remarkable woman our Cheri. You could tell nothing of her health struggles unless she had told you about it. Always a smile, always patient, steady and loving. 

I miss you dear friend. I miss your unconditional love and your beautiful radiant smile. I know you're at peace and I know you're with the angels ....because if not you then who? Blessed that we met on what I didn't know would be your last trip to India.

Dearest Cheri Devi, we will always remember you as a fun loving and gloriously irreverent with a spark that lit up any room you entered. We were lucky to be in your orbit, however briefly. We will miss you forever, Anoop and Simran

So many talents! Cheri and I shared a love of literature and writing. She loved so many things--India, Mexico, art, animals, books--but even more, she loved people. Her warm and loving heart shone through always. She was not afraid of death--at least that's what she told me--and from what I saw, she approached her illness with wisdom and tranquility. We were lucky to know her.
