Mary Eleanor Dunlap died on September 18, 2010, at Greenspring Village assisted living facility in Springfield, Virginia. She was born on October 10, 1919, in Humboldt, Tennessee, to Moses Lee Dunlap, a farmer, and Lula Catherine Hefley Dunlap, a home maker. Mary was the ninth of ten children born to her parents, two of whom died in infancy. Mary remained single; she is survived by several nephews and nieces, none of whom live in the local area.
Following high school graduation in Humboldt, Mary completed two years of business school and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to work as an accountant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She advanced through the agency, eventually moving to the Washington, D.C. area to become an auditor. Mary retired from the Office of Audit, U.S. Department of Agriculture on June 17, 1977, with 35 years of federal service.
Mary’s retirement years were spent in volunteer service to a variety of church, charitable, and business organizations. She was treasurer for the Arlington Church of Christ for a number of years. She taught Vacation Bible School. She served on the board of directors for the AGAPE charitable trust. She volunteered for the American Red Cross and was a member of the American Society of Women Accountants. Mary frequently assisted at Rainbow Thrift Store that generated operating income for the Rainbow Christian Services children’s home in Gainesville, Virginia. In addition to her volunteer service, she traveled widely, both within the United States and throughout the world.
A memorial service will honor Mary’s life on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at the Arlington Church of Christ, beginning at 11:45 a.m. The church is located at 20 N. Irving Street, Arlington, Virginia 22201. In lieu of flowers, donations to any of the charities which Mary served are encouraged. Addresses are provided on the following page.
