I started at the Washington Post in 1989 as a temp employee and Phil showed me the ropes working for him as his Field Support Rep.  Six months later I was hired.  We had a wonderful working relationship.  So good that we started a Maryland Home Delivery Office in New Carrollton, MD.  I saw Phil last year at the annual picnic and it was a joy to see that huge smile and his wonderful heart.  We reminisced about the good old days.  Without a doubt he will be missed. My 15 year old daughter was in a very serious auto accident, I needed to go back to work to help support the family. I needed to work at home because she could not be left alone. I went to Phil with my idea to print and mail invoices for Washington Post customers for the Agents.  He helped me to develop a flyer offering my services to the Agents. Then he helped to get the word out to them. I called him with shared excitement when I had 10 Agents on board, the again with 20 and all the way up to 350. We are not doing mailing these days but have been working for the Agents for 26 years.
My family and I will always be grateful for Phil's support and encouragement through a very difficult time in our life.

My heart is heavy and send our love and prayers to the Hottle family.

Phil was my boss towards the end of my career at the Washington Post. He and I both retired at the same time and maintained a friendship for the subsequent ten years after we left the Post. 

I had worked for the Post circulation for close to 20 years prior to working with Phil ,  but Phil was able to show me aspects of the job I had yet to see.  His humor and patience helped me through a turbulent time and for that I will always be grateful.  Even now,
 I remember his big smile and bountiful laugh. 

The Post offered me so many opportunities to meet  dynamic , intelligent, generous people, I am fortunate to have so many memorable experiences and "Mr. Hottle" is at the very top of my list. 

Phil gave me my start at TWP back in 1986.  I'm so thankful for that opportunity.  
Phil mentored myself and so many others in the Circulation department.  He taught new agents, zone managers and division managers, what  a true circulation person is.    Phil was a cornerstone in the department for so many years and his professionalism is still ingrained with many of active managers today.
More important than being a true circulator, Phil was a good man with a set of values that was always an example  on display.

I would be neglectful if I didn't mention Phil's sense of humor.  Oh he could get me going sometimes and just for the fun of it.  I can still see the grin on his face when he did.
Heck, he nick named me "Rappahannock Slim"  when I got locked out of the company car in Rappahannock County and I had to break out a window to get inside.    I could go on and on with all the  Phil stories and pranks.
Phil will be missed by so many whom he touched through the years.

My heart goes out to  entire Hottle family during this very difficult time of their loss.

It is with a heavy heart to hear that  Phil has passed. I shall never forget his smile and charm. 

I think I met Phil at the Krispy Kreme in Bailey’s Crossroads Virginia  with my father George and my brother Steve. It was the early seventies when the best of the best of the distribution contractors met after they had delivered the bundles to the carriers for the Washington Post. Phil loved to make fun of my brother and they traded jabs. My father held Phil with the greatest esteem.  He loved Phil. 

Like Phil, I to was a military police officer, as was my dad in WWII.  Phil told me about his days as an MP. He stood tall in my memory of the WP people 

Rest In Peace Phil. The Reed family loved you.
