

Phyllis L. Prophet, 97 passed away on February 28, 2016 in Stafford, Virginia. Phyllis was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 20, 1918. Following the death of her mother she spent her childhood in the care of her maternal grandparents on a small farm in Bruce Valley, Wisconsin. Phyllis was the Strum High School class valedictorian in 1936. In May 1946 she married Mark L. Prophet (now deceased), and in 1958 moved with him and their five young children to Washington, DC. For most of her life Phyllis lived in Arlington, Virginia and worked until her retirement at the American Security Bank and in retail positions at the Hecht Company in Washington, DC.
Phyllis was a devout Christian grounded in strong Norwegian values of honesty, modesty and hard work. She was an avid reader, skilled gardener and seamstress, but most of all she was a loving mother, attentive grandmother and great grandmother, and friend. She was an active member of the Arlington Forest United Methodist Church and for many years assisted with the local “Meals on Wheels” organization.
Phyllis is survived by her five children, Rebecca Lipinski of Stafford, VA, Daniel Prophet of Dale City, VA, Beth Bowen of Arlington, VA, Marcia Prophet of Santa Fe, NM, and Allyson Henrich of Springfield, VA. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Phyllis touched the lives of all who knew her. Her gentle smile, tenderness, and deep devotion to family, to friends and to God were hallmarks of a long and cherished life. The family wishes to thank the staff of Greenfield Senior Living in Stafford, VA, and the physical therapists at Lighthouse Healthcare for their kindness, compassion and caring support for Phyllis during the last three years of her life.
A memorial service celebrating Phyllis’ life will be held at Noon on March 15, 2016 at Arlington Forest United Methodist Church (AFUMC). Inurnment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church, VA. Memorial donations in Phyllis’ name can be made to Arlington Forest United Methodist Church, 4701 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203.
