
Richard Dunkley Ellis, 80, of Arlington passed away after a lengthy illness on July 8, 2015. He is survived by his wife Janie C. Addington Ellis, sons Richard Lee (Laura) Ellis and Kevin Lee (Crystal) Ellis, grandson Sean Kenneth Ellis, and granddog Coco. Predeceased by his parents Clarence and Edna Ellis. Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home Arlington on Tuesday July 14 at 5:00PM followed by a service at 6:00PM. An additional visitation will be held at Baker Funeral Home, Pound, Virginia, at 5:00PM Sunday July 19 followed by a service Monday July 20 at Baker Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Pound, Virginia.
He was born July 13, 1934 at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC. As a young child his family moved to Fall Church, VA. After getting his GED at the Navy Yard he enlisted and was on active duty for four years and in the reserves for eleven years. He then went on to work at Akers Oldsmobile Cadillac as a mechanic before owning with his father an American service station and a Sunoco service station in Arlington, VA. After selling the service stations he worked at a Toyota dealership as a mechanic before taking a position at Dowty Rotol as an aviation machinist. From there he went to work at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC as a machinist/mechanic and worked his way up to being the laundry manager for the hospital. He retired from Saint Elizabeth's in 1999.
As a young adult he enjoyed racing DU Stock Outboard Runabout boats and won numerous trophies racing the boat he built. For the majority of his life he was an avid bowler. Till the end he remained a kid at heart.
