For everyone that knew Blake, his wit and sarcastic sense of humor was quickly apparent and appreciated by those of us that like to laugh at the oft found absurdity of our world. This is one area where Blake and I found commonality in our approach to life…we both worked extremely hard; but also knew that hard work was that much more enjoyable with good dose of humor mixed in. For us, our humor would quickly devolve into banter that was (appropriately) absent from most workplaces.  We no doubt caught “new” people off guard with our flavor of humor; but anyone who experienced it quickly came to recognize it came from a place of mutual respect, a strong working relationship and a general desire to lighten the mood while doing the job at hand. Blake made our workplace and otherwise mundane day to day much more Fun.

Even with all his sarcasm, it was clear to anyone who interacted with Blake that he genuinely cared about others. At any time (and often to my chagrin with key projects at hand), if you came to Blake with an issue (work or personal), he would immediately stop what he was doing and take on trying to solve your issue as if it were his own. If there was any chance he could help another person, he would certainly give it a try.  And, for someone who interacted with every single Scorpion (Sense Corp employee) on a recurring basis, his positive, supportive energy quickly became a corporate strength…and there’s really nothing more Human than helping those around you.

This combination of being Brilliant, Creative, Human and Fun, earned Blake the affectionate and aptly assigned Sense Corp moniker of the “Honey Badger.

I will miss our laugh-filled outings to the Joy Luck Chinese buffet, Sense Corp events and just our days in the office; but, Blake has made a lasting impression on lives of everyone he encountered, and especially on me. I am forever grateful for the time I had with the Honey Badger and his memory will certainly live on within me.

Blake and I worked together on a daily basis for over a decade at Sense Corp. Our relationship quickly evolved beyond just co-workers, and I was proud to call Blake a friend.

At Sense Corp, culture was central to our existence and success.  We sought out team members who fit the Sense Corp compass…People who were Brilliant, Creative, Human and Fun!  Blake undoubtedly possessed all these attributes.

As a small, growing consulting firm with very limited internal IT staff, Blake was the IT glue and single thread for implementing, maintaining & supporting all our internal systems.  While no one will accuse Blake of applying rigorous methodology, he rose to the occasion for whatever was needed. His vast understanding of technology in general, breadth of technical capability, deep familiarity with our systems and unrelenting desire to just make it work, Blake successfully managed our environment and fixed any issue and challenge that came our way.

In a world technology specialists and deep specialization, Blake did a job that at almost any other organization would take at least 5 separate people to do.  Beyond that, Blake was extremely proud of what he created, truly owned it and, as his family knows, was committed 24/7 should any issues arise anytime. For this, I am forever grateful, and, in this regard, he was truly Brilliant and Creative in his work.

Many years ago I was a student athlete at Pacific High School. I always didn't have money for a Gatorade and the Lillard family was gracious enough to give me a pass. My senior football season was a rough year. Blake and his mom would say encouraging words to me to help me get through the tough losses. This meant a lot to me and I appreciated that they would take the time to help me stay encouraged and push through. Thank you Lillard family and Blake for always having a cold drink and encouraging words.
