In our deepest sorrow, we announce that Corey Joseph Gurnow, age 32, went to be with the Lord on June 3rd, 2025, after a 10 year fight with Melanocytoma of the brain that recently metastasized to other parts of the brain, liver, and lungs.
Corey was the beloved husband to Elizabeth “Libby” (Hedges) Gurnow for 5 wonderful years, fur dad to loyal pup Luna Belle, precious son to Gregory and Sheri (Schmeisser) Gurnow, treasured “bubby” to Clarissa (Nathan) Kopp, cherished grandson to Don & Peggy Schmeisser and Ron & Sandra Gurnow, nephew to Craig (Angela) Schmeisser and Jeffrey Gurnow, and cousin to Megan and Ryan Schmeisser, and Katie and Courtney Gurnow; wonderful son-in-law to John and Laura (Joest) Hedges, brother-in-law to Melissa (Terry) Baker, Tiffaney (Joey) Medicis, and Brandon Hedges, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is survived by all these cherished family members in addition to his dearest church family, countless friends, and co-workers.
We know Corey is now with his Grams, cousins Evan and Kyle Gurnow, Grandpa Ray Joest, and sister-in-law Shana Hedges. Those who knew Corey, even just a little, lost a shining light in their lives. We take comfort in knowing Heaven gained a priceless angel. We will wait to hear about Heaven’s buffet and if Heaven indeed has the best rollercoasters.
Born in Niles, MI in 1993 Corey spent his elementary years in Imperial, MO before his family moved to Labadie, MO where he was a proud Blue Jay – graduating from Washington High School in 2012. Corey was a gEEk at heart following in his Dad’s footsteps he earned his Electrical Engineering degree at Missouri S&T in 2016. He went on to work at Ameren MO in 2017 and passionately innovated as an Electrical and Project Engineer for 8 years, earning his Professional Engineer (PE) license along the way in 2022.
Corey’s smile was infectious, and he could always make you laugh with his sly humor. Corey was always willing to lend his time, resources, or a helping hand to anyone he met. Beloved by his co-workers, he was often referred to as “such a pleasure to work with.” Corey loved spending time with his family and friends, especially going on “adventures” with his wife Libby and their dog Luna, after they met in 2018. His passions included loving Jesus wholeheartedly, spending time outdoors hiking and jumping in the waves, cheering on his favorite sports teams, and winning (or should I say “mastering with some research”) every board game and video game he ever encountered.
Corey had an unwavering faith and passion to share the Good News he found with the nations – near and far. Corey went through more in his last 10 years than most people go through their entire lives, but he walked his good fight wholeheartedly step-in-step with the Lord. Through his personal relationship and assured reliance in Jesus, Corey gave everyone around him a little glimpse of Heaven. Corey was a shining example to all with his positive attitude and overflowing faith. We are all better versions of ourselves because of the “Corey effect.” Corey and his wife Libby are active members of First Baptist Church Arnold, and we know his presence will be greatly missed.
Corey – You’ve fought your fight, and your race is run. The only scars in Heaven are on the hands that hold you now. Go rest in the arms of Jesus. We love and miss you, but we know we will see you soon— “be right back.”
In lieu of flowers please make contributions in Corey’s name to:
- American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA), to continue the fight to end this horrible disease.
- First Baptist Church Arnold – Auditorium Renovation Fund, to share the gift of gathering in the Lord’s house (one of Corey’s “happy places”).
