I didnt know you Bill,can I call ya that?but I did have the pleasure of meeting your Son Rich and I can say you did a great job,your namesake will be carried on well.

When I think of my dad, I think of a man with very high convictions.  I sincerely have never met anyone who believed so strongly that there was a right way to do things.  His beliefs were so innate to him, he literally could not control them.  He was born this way, like a pit-bull that has the innate instinct to protect his family.   Given that my father drilled these convictions into our heads over all these years, I think he would be proud to hear me say some of them to you.

One of my dad’s strongest convictions was to always provide for your family. I watched my father get up and go to work every day and never complain about his job.  He would then come home and work nights and on weekends going to garage sales, auctions and flea markets to make extra money for the family.  I will never forget being in elementary school and thinking, that I want to be a good provider like my dad.  Many days when I am getting dressed to go to work, I think of my father doing the same thing all those years.   

A second one of his convictions, was that we were not going to be babied that the world was tough, and we need to be able to do things on our own. Many times when I was young, I could not understand why my dad just told me to go do something and “Figure it out”.  I still remember being in 3rd grade when I was expected to go change the spark plugs on our 1967 Mustang.  I was a small kid, and I literally had to climb up the bumper and crawl under the hood to change those spark plugs.  I then went into the house to tell dad how proud I was that I had accomplished my task.  Well, it turns out that I put the wires back on the wrong way and the car wouldn’t start.  Oh man was I in trouble.   That said, it was incident after incident like this in my life that has made me be able to handle things on my own.

One my favorite of my dad’s convictions was that he would back us and protect us at all costs, but that we were expected to stand up for our beliefs and never to let anyone push us around. 

I will never forget the day my older sister was in JUNIOR high, and she came home crying because she heard that a group of HIGH school girls was going to meet her at the bus stop and beat her up.  My sister has always been tall and a looker, which attracted the attention of the older boys.  This time it turns out, she attacked the attention of the boyfriend of the toughest girl in school.  Well, the next morning my dad drove my sister and I to the bus stop.  He sat in the car and watched a blue Ford Maverick pull up.  Sure enough a boy and three high school girls got out of the car and proceeded to walk over to my sister and start pushing her.  My dad got out of the car and grabbed the boy by his jacket and threw him up against the car.  He told the boy that he had better stay in his car and not to touch my sister.  He then looked at the girls and said, “Now you three are going to fight my daughter. However, you will not all gang up on her.  I want you to get in-line one and a time, and she is going to kick all your butts!  I watched my sisters face in shock.  That said, the simple belief that my dad displayed in my sister was enough to scare these girls.  They all apologized and never messed with her again.  This was typical dad, he would be there to protect us, but he would not fight our fights for us.


Now as with most people with convictions like this sometimes they can be hard to be around.  Anyone that knew my dad knew not to talk politics as you could never win.  After many years of watching my father argue with his friends and family, I decided a new tactic.  I decided that I would tell him I am no longer voting and that I just don’t care about those topics.  His response was fine but you are still going to sit down and listen to me just in case you decide to run for office someday.  See just like that pit-bull he simply couldn’t give up on his convictions as they were innate to him.

I would say that I did see a change in the pit-bull, when my little sister came along.  He truly had a soft spot for her.  I will never forget coming home one day to see that my little sister had spray painted her bedroom door all different colors.  I was floored by this, because the household I grew up in, I wasn’t allowed to put a nail in the wall.  I thought oh man; she is going to get it this time!!!  I had visions in my head of my little sister having to spend hours sanding the door and then staining it.  Well, when I asked my dad about it, he said, it was fine she was just expressing herself.  Well, clearly the pit-bull was softening up.  Then when the grandkids came the softening continued.  He was an amazing grandfather; he would get down on the floor and roll around with the kids.  You could tell he just loved them, and they loved him in return.  Dad, loved all of us, but he clearly loved mom the most.  Mom, I know dad is gone, but I also know he will be watching over you in heaven.  As a matter of fact, dad talked to me last night and told me to tell you not to be sad, that it is now your turn to get down on the ground and roll around with the kids. In closing, I would like to tell my dad, thank you for everything, you were unselfish, and you gave your whole life for us. Your convictions and memories will live on in us and through us forever. We love you, and you will be missed!!!!!!!!

Bill was a great guy! I always seen him with a smile and always talking about his family and sharing his life experiences. Bill always called me "kiddo" and was a wonderful, loyal friend. He was truly loved by many and will be so dearly missed.

Papaw, I am so lucky to have you as a grandpa. You're so special my middle name is William after you! You even taught me how to drink out of a straw at six months old. I loved stealing drinks from your soda, doing the big wave, playing with you, learning new words from you and having you tease me all the time. Thank you for buying me more toys than my Mommy ever knew what to do with. They will all be a reminder of your endless love for me and your giant giving heart. I am so lucky to have a Papaw like you and I know that my Mommy and Daddy will teach me all about you as I grow up!

We made it 39 years and beat the odds! You have been a great husband, father to the kids and grandkids. We have had our fair share of ups and downs but through it all you have always been there for me. When we first met I always thought you were hot stuff. I knew right away that I wanted you in my life. You've always been the provider for our family and I knew that I could count on you to do what was needed. Thank you for putting up with me every day and truly taking care of me. I don't know what I would do without you. I am so grateful for our life together and the family we have built. Everytime I hear "Nights in White Satin" I know that you are in heaven singing to me. I love you and will be with you again!

The one and only constant in life is family and love.  Each go hand in hand.  With that thought, the only true comfort is knowing that one day we will all be reunited again.
