SERVICE POSTPONED TO FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2018 AT 11:00 A.M. Harold Sidney "Jose" Duke, 86, a lifelong resident of Ashland, departed this life peacefully on December 30, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Nelson Page Duke and Pauline Wood Duke; brother, Thomas Nelson Page Duke Jr.; and sister, Pauline Wood Duke. He is survived by his dear friend, Lois W. Herndon; numerous cousins and friends. Mr. Duke was a graduate of Benedictine and attended Randolph Macon College briefly before he left school to serve in the United States Air Force. Harold was most well known as the owner of Duke's Market located off Route 1 in Ashland, which opened in 1963. He retired and closed the store in 2001. Harold had a strong passion for his hometown college, Randolph Macon, where he was a loyal and consistent supporter of the Yellow Jackets Club. Harold also enjoyed attending the Richmond Braves games, loved to tend to his farm, fish, bowl and play bingo. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 3, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home - Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Ashland, 800 Thompson St., Ashland, Va. 23005. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
