He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Davitt McDermott, and his brother, Peter Douglas McDermott.
Kevin is survived by his cherished daughter and son-in-law, Kaitlyn and Dylan Short, along with many loyal friends who were like family to him.
Kevin was known by many as a true “car guy.” He had a deep passion for automobiles, especially Dodge, proudly declaring, “Mopar purple all the way.” He loved racing, restoring, and building cars with his good friend Scott, and he found great joy in sharing that passion with others who appreciated the craft and culture of classic and performance vehicles.
He enjoyed shooting pool at the club. By his own admission—and everyone else’s—he was the world’s most “okay” pool player, but that never stopped him from enjoying the game and the company around the table.
Kevin always thought of himself as a beach guy, but over time he discovered a deep appreciation for the beauty of the Virginia mountains as well. Wherever he was, he brought humor, loyalty, and a willingness to lend a hand. He was often the first to help—whether you asked for it or not.
He also loved the simple joys of life, including Star Wars, building with Legos, and sharing laughs with the people he cared about most.
Kevin will be remembered for his generous spirit, his love of cars, and the friendships he built throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to Kevin's Remembrance Celebration at Huddle Up Sports Bar and Grill, Ashland, VA, on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 2 PM- 6 PM.
