R. Peatross Turner

R. Peatross Turner, 81, a lifelong resident of Hanover County died on April 2, 2018 at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. He was born in Ashland on February 2, 1937 to Alfred W. Turner and Maria Meredith Turner. He attended Randolph Macon College and graduated from T.C. Williams Law School in 1961. He joined the law firm of Williams, McGehee and Willey upon graduation where he remained until 1970. He served on the Town Council for Ashland from 1963-1970. He was also Judge of the Ashland Town Court and served as Town Attorney for Ashland from 1969-1970. He became the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Hanover County in 1971 and remained in that position until 1975, when he decided to conduct his own private practice from 1975-1994 at 117 Hanover Ave. in Ashland. He was appointed as Assistant Commissioner of Accounts for Hanover County from 1994-1996. He then was appointed to Commissioner of Accounts from 1996 until he retired in 2012 after 50 years of practicing law. He is preceded in death by his brother William Meredith (Mike) Turner and his sister Anne Turner Taylor. He is survived by his wife of 58 years. Virginia Thompson Turner, a brother Alfred W. Turner, Jr. and his wife Betty Carter Turner of Ashland, VA, his sister Jean Turner Basto of Winston-Salem, NC, his son R. Peatross (Ric) Turner, III and his wife Linda Boles Turner, his daughter Maria Turner Creel and her husband David N. Creel, his son W. Bradley Turner and his wife Marlynn Shelton Turner, as well as seven grandchildren Spencer Turner Bailey, Virginia Lynn Creel, Sally Preston Turner, David Norman Creel, Jr, Linda Meredith (Edi) Turner, Lucille Grace Turner and Audrey Frances Turner. The family will receive visitors at Nelsen Funeral Home in Ashland on Thursday April 5 from 6-8 pm. In addition, a graveside service will be held at Fork Church in Doswell, VA on Friday 6 at 10:00 am with a gathering following in the Parrish Hall.
