Susan Joan Chambers, 84, passed away on January 20, 2024, at home in Ashland, surrounded by family. Susan was born on November 23, 1939, in Sacramento, California to Harold and Dorothy Wulff. After graduating from California State University, Sacramento, Susan taught elementary school, and later in life served senior citizens as Assistant Director of the Hunterdon County Office on Aging in Flemington, New Jersey.
She was a dedicated and prolific volunteer, coordinating hospital candy stripers, serving on community boards and committees, delivering for Meals on Wheels, and helping found and run the Hanover Interfaith Free Clinics. She was recognized by Hanover County and the Governor’s office for her community service. She was also a proud member of St James the Less Episcopal Church.
Her greatest love was her husband, Lee, and their family. Susan and Lee met at a fraternity dance and were inseparable for 69 years, marrying in 1959 and moving across the country multiple times while raising three children before retiring to Ashland. Susan was a devoted wife and partner to Lee, and a steadfast and loving mother, and later a doting grandmother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she loved going to school performances, taking them on adventures, playing games with them and just being “Nana” - to them as well as to their friends. She was always sweet and kind, but she was also a loyal advocate for the family, friends, and community she loved so much.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Carol Doersch. She is survived by her husband, Lee; daughter, Kathleen; son, Brent and his wife Jennifer and their daughters Margaret and Julia; and son, Joel and his wife Alison, and their sons Ian and Andrew and daughter Maryn. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Crespo, many nieces and nephews, and her two faithful companion dogs, Sofie and Sandy.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at The Depot, 107 South Railroad Avenue in Ashland on Friday, February 9th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. There will be a memorial service at St James the Less Episcopal Church, 125 Beverly Road in Ashland on Saturday, February 10th at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Susan’s honor to Hanover Interfaith Free Clinics (hanoverfreeclinics.org).
