William Cofer Cowles, 35, of Ashland, Virginia, died peacefully in his sleep on December 3, 2017. Bill was a free spirit whose life on this Earth was much too short. Bill was a 2000 graduate of Midlothian High School, and he attended Clemson University for one year prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attack. Following a disabling injury, he joked with his friends about having both the time and inclination to become a philosopher, and he did. He spent long hours reading Scripture, the classics, political science tomes, military history, finance, economics and many other topics. If you happened to be on his email list, you received a steady stream of links and attachments intended to broaden your mind. Bill was fiercely pro-life in his beliefs. He voted for Donald J. Trump, and he was proud of it. Bill will be joining his best friend, Kammo, in the afterlife, and the two of them will be welcoming their next-best friend, Kaya, before too long. He and his two brindle pups were constant companions, and Bill always said they communicated with him much more effectively than he could communicate with them. Hundreds of people will miss Bill and his quick wit, but none more than his two “adopted” children via Child Fund International. Bill had supported Ever (who lives in Bolivia) and Yokthong (who lives in Thailand) since they were preschoolers, and now each are approaching graduation from high school. He gave generously to their education and to their families- even providing the funding for a brain operation for Ever. Bill could talk and connect with literally anyone. He corresponded regularly with a number of incarcerated individuals, sending them books, clothing, commissary money, and his very special perspective on life in hopes that they would find the right path once they had served their time. No one will be impacted more by Bill's passing than his brother, Noah Gable Cowles, who recently celebrated with his wife, Katherine Thompson Cowles, the birth of their first child at their home in Florida. Bill was so proud when he learned that his first nephew would carry his name - Mosby William Howard Cowles. Although Bill and his sister, Lynn Ausley Cowles, of Austin, Texas, were opposite sides of the coin when it came to political leanings, they kept Verizon and Comcast in business with their lively text and email debates. One favorite memory is of Bill and Lynn, dressed up in their pajamas, cowboy hats and cowboy boots, dancing to the theme song of the television show “Dallas” just before heading off to bed. In addition to his parents, sister, brother, sister-in-law and nephew, Bill is survived by his Aunt Marilyn (“Mrs. Computerhead” to Bill) and Uncle John Cowles, as well as their two children, Nathan and Taylor in Northern Virginia. On the Cofer side, Bill had four uncles, Jim, Jeff, Ken and Marc and their families in Ohio, as well as his now grieving grandmother, Doris Jeane Gable Cofer of Willard, Ohio, who knows all too well the pain of losing a child. Bill's father, Carroll William Cowles II of Midlothian, Virginia, and his mother, Deborah Lynn Cofer Cowles of Doswell, Virginia, are confident that Bill passed contentedly and peacefully, knowing that he was and will always be loved from the depths of their hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Child Fund International in memory of William C. Cowles.
