It is with heavy hearts the family of Albert Dahlman of Assiniboia, SK announces his passing at the age of 75 on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at Dr. F. H. Wigmore Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw, with family members by his side. He is survived by his wife Shirley (Fluto); two sons: Ryan (Leslie) and Devin (Christianne); five grandchildren: Tyson, Luke, Elyssa, Boden and Colby; sister Ruth Kneiling and brother Lars Dahlman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews across the prairie provinces. Albert was born on Dec. 12, 1941 to Axel and Mabel Dahlman. Albert's own father passed away when he was close to three and he had to learn a lot of things along the way. He started working construction by building houses and pouring cement before he reached his teenage years for his brother-in-law's company, helping to put food on the table for his family. As an adult Albert was involved in a lot of different organizations. He was president and coached in Minor baseball and hockey and was a certified instructor in both. He helped in different projects like the project lead in local Kinsmen tree sales and fundraisers for different community projects. He helped when he could with school and class projects for his children. Albert was recognized locally, provincially and federally for all of the volunteer hours he put into these organizations. Albert worked for the Department of Highways from 1963 to 1996 as a foreman of his crew and covered a large region surrounding Assiniboia with Highway 2 north and south of Assiniboia and Highway 13 west and east. He retired, but decided he wasn't quite ready to stop working full time. He then worked in a similar capacity for another six years for the RM Lake of the Rivers working with a crew handling the roads surrounding Assiniboia within the RM. He loved working with his crews and loved sharing stories with the guys. In fact, Albert was a storyteller and could swap stories with anyone on a wide variety of topics. He loved reading the newspaper, reading books and watching television news and was informed. He was smart and had the kind, gentle charisma about him, but was furiously independent. He was a good teacher because he knew what it took to learn and had no pretenses about people. It didn't matter how much you had, he treated everyone the same. He judged and treated people accordingly by their character not by material stuff, something we should all take to heart. He really respected his mother in-law's father and learned a lot of gardening tips from him and would do anything for 'Grandpa'. He loved hockey and his Montreal Canadiens, but loved his beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders even more. One of his many highlights from live games was when he got to go to the 2013 Grey Cup at Taylor Field. His last football game couldn't have been topped by anything he would have seen afterwards. Family and friends said goodbye at an afternoon gravesite ceremony at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Assiniboia on June 30 with Pastor Doug Shepherd officiating. This was followed by fellowship at the Messiah Lutheran Church Hall with the Lutheran Women's League serving lunch. The family would like to make special mention and thanks to the staff at Prairie Villa where he and Shirley have resided for the last two years and also a big thank you to Ross Funeral Home staff especially Anette Pryce who handled all of the funeral-related arrangements. Also thanks to the Lutheran ladies who have helped with the lunch as well as Pastor Shepherd for driving all the way from Moose Jaw. Any memorial gifts can be directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Saskatchewan, 1738 Quebec Ave Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
