Clara Smith (nee Brandt) passed away August 16, 2013, in the Regina General Hospital. Mom was born Easter Sunday March 27, 1921 on the family farm at Kayville, SK., daughter of Christian & Emilia Brandt of Kayville. She is survived by one son Duane (Janet), grandsons Derek and Tyler (Melody), great-granddaughter Elisha, seven sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. She is predeceased by her husband Gustav, her parents, brothers Sigmund, Jacob, Frank (Helen) and sisters Emma Segaert (Rene) and Regina (in infancy), step-mother Sophie and step-brother Willie Tritthardt. Mom went to a small country school four miles from the farm. She stayed at home until age 18, at which time she went to work at Ogema, Verwood, Rouleau and Regina, where she operated the passenger elevator at the Sterling Trust Building. In 1944, she married Gustav Smith and they farmed at Verwood and were blessed with a son, Duane. They retired to Assiniboia in 1986. Mom worked hard and always kept things neat and tidy. She loved music, playing the accordion and the harmonica, dancing, baking and embroidery, but most of all she loved her family. Her grandsons, Derek and Tyler, were her pride and joy. She was blessed with additional joy when great-granddaughter Elisha was born. Mom was an active member of both the Verwood and Assiniboia Lutheran Churches. She was also a member of the Credit Union, Co-op and Sask. Wheat Pool. Duane and Janet fondly remember her 91st birthday. We called in early March to tell her we were taking her out for supper. When talking to her a couple of weeks later we were informed that there was a chicken in the deepfreeze and it HAD to be eaten. It turns out that Mom had a magic deepfreeze and the chicken had grown and become a turkey that she cooked. The table was set and all we had to do was sit down and eat. We were, however, allowed to clean up. Funeral Service was held Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Ross Funeral Chapel in Assiniboia with Pastor Aden Barden officiating. Tribute was given by nephew, Keith Brandt. Music Ministry was led by organist, Judy Chubb and Messiah Lutheran Church Choir. Duet by Judy Chubb and Lois Seeley, “Star of the East”. Pallbearers were: Raymond Smith, Lloyd Coldwell, Lorne Domes, Elridge Stianson, Art Brandt, and Ken Berner. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Donations in Memory of Clara were made to the Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to South Country Health Care Foundation for the Assiniboia Union Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.rossfuneralservice.com
