Dad was born on September 14, 1930, being the first baby boy born in the new Rockglen Hospital. He followed his brother and sister by nearly 23 years, so he grew up like an only child with many nieces and nephews close in age. Dad attended Lacordaire school but quit around 12 to help his dad farm on the homestead SE of Rockglen. As a teenager he worked for their neighbors, the Carney’s, just south of the border then started renting some land around the area to farm. At 19 he met his future wife, Dorothy (Siggelkow), who was working at the McCutcheon’s farm nearby and they married on March 25, 1950. Together they built a wonderful life on a farm south of Fife Lake. Dad took pride in his farm with his John Deere equipment and his Polled-Hereford cows. After dinner you’d always find him lying on the floor for a quick nap before heading back outside to work. Dad also made sure that every farm building that needed sprucing got a splash of paint in the summer to keep the farm looking its best. They raised three children on the farm: Valda (1950), Glenda (1954), and Darrell (1961). If Dad wasn’t doing farm work, he loved woodworking in his spare time. They had an active social life attending parties for all their friends and relatives, playing cards, going visiting for a coffee or happy hour. Dances were hardly ever missed, and they were a treat to watch on the dance floor. They enjoyed travelling a lot and made many special memories and friendships along the way. Darrell took over the farm in 1992 when Mom and Dad retired to Rockglen. Dad still loved the farm and continued to drive out daily using different routes every day, until at 84 his declining eyesight ended his trips. But even after that, he cherished visits from his old farming buddies as they talked about farming over a drink. Everyone who knew Dad, knew how calm and patient he was and nothing ever seemed to rattle him. He even had a sense of humor which brought a smile or even a laugh from his many visitors. Just last December Glenda phoned to wish him a Merry Christmas and because she knew that he wasn’t doing well she ended with, “Take care Dad. No horsing around and behave yourself.” He replied, “Thanks for the advice,” with a little chuckle in his voice. Thanks to their granddaughter, Geraldene, for coming to live with them and the wonderful care from the Home Care team. Their family will be forever grateful to all of them for that enabled them to remain in their own home until after Mom passed just shy of their 73rd Wedding Anniversary. It was then that Dad found the house too lonely and moved into Grasslands where he enjoyed the rest of his days in the company of some of his dearest friends.
He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy; grandson Stuart Lanoie; parents William and Catherine Swanson; brother Willie and wife Sadie; sister Barbara and husband Ben Osburne; brother-in-law Gerald and wife Eunice; sisters-in-law Lorraine and Lynne Siggelkow and many dear friends.
He will be lovingly missed by his three children: Valda (Jim) Dean of Lisieux, Glenda (Ken) Bemister of North Vancouver, and Darrell (Marilou Travland) of Rockglen; along with four grandchildren: Geraldene (Justin) Fuhrmann, Erin (Luke) Moore, Ian (Klara) Bemister and Chris (Nina) Bemister; eleven great-grandchildren Shelby and Mandy Fuhrmann, Taylor and Reese Moore, Kayden, Brooke, Justin, Dominik and Adam Bemister and Mason and Olivia Bemister; as well as many nieces and nephews. His kindness will definitely be remembered by those who knew him.
