It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and friend, Harold Goldwin Smith, of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. He passed away peacefully on January 23, 2015 at Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 76. Harold was born December 17, 1938 in Frontier, Saskatchewan to Orville and Dorothy Smith (nee Hanlon).
Harold started grade school in Moose Jaw, and completed high school in Assiniboia. Upon completion of high school, he attended University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Bachelor of Education degree. Harold had a successful and thoroughly enjoyable career as a teacher and a principal mostly with the Assiniboia school division.
Serving as a teacher and school principal for over thirty years in Assiniboia, was a truly rewarding aspect of Harold’s life. As an educator, improving reading literacy, providing students with recreational activities, and maintaining high standards of behavior, were especially meaningful, always having students’ best interests in mind. All his life, he enjoyed talking with former students, took a genuine interest in how they were, and was happy when they succeeded. He served enthusiastically on many committees over the years, as he was committed to growth and development of Assiniboia.
Working made Harold happy and he had an entrepreneurial spirit. In addition, but unrelated to his career, he had countless sideline pursuits which he enjoyed and he was proud of his many business ventures. Time spent with his wife, family, and friends was his most important pastime. He was a loving husband, wonderful dad, and great friend. He was always there, offering his best advice. He was patient, encouraging, positive, and optimistic. We will miss you.
Harold is survived by three children: son Jeff and sons, Taylor, Parker and Corbin of Calgary, AB; son Greg (Katie) and step-daughters Tia (Kevin Poulin), Toni, and Tayler of Prince Albert, SK, son Spencer of Victoria BC, and daughter Danielle of Moose Jaw; daughter Lindsay (Marty Brown) and sons Carter and Calder of Weyburn, SK. He is predeceased by his wife Mary, son Mark, and parents Orville and Dorothy. He is also survived by his sister Shirley (Ron Lamb) of Moose Jaw, SK, brother, Mel (Carol) and nieces Rene, Christie (Derek Lawrence), and Laura of Saskatoon, SK.
Special thanks to his friends for their kind support, in addition, to all the Assiniboia and Weyburn medical staff for all their special attention and care.
