Magdalina “Maggie” Longpre passed away peacefully, at Assiniboia Union Hospital on December 7, 2025 at the age of 84, with her loving family by her side. Maggie was born to Pius and Barbara (Bokamyer) Deringer on March 17, 1941 at the family homestead north of Mankota. She was the fourth child of six children.
Maggie grew up on the family farm and travelled 3 miles to attend school at Southside. From spring to fall, she went to school by horse and cart and in the winter by horse and sleigh. Maggie helped work on the family farm. There were always chores to do like picking rock, stooking sheaves, hauling grain among other daily chores. Maggie‘s mother taught her how to crochet and knit and she loved to make afghans, doilies, slippers, toques and mittens and later on, when her grandchildren were born, many received baby afghans. Maggie loved music and she loved to sing with her sister Margaret, whilst taking turns playing guitar. Maggie also enjoyed playing accordion, as her father played button accordion, and later she played the chord organ.
Maggie married Dennis Longpre on December 9, 1961. They raised four children, Roger, Donna, Ken and Greg. From 1965 to 1970 they lived in Assiniboia then moved back to Mankota where they lived the remaining years of their lives. Maggie enjoyed selling Avon and babysitting then in 1975 she started working full-time at Kouri’s Market until 1989. For the next 15 years, Maggie worked in the kitchen at Mankota Union Hospital. She loved to cook and took extra pride in cooking special meals and desserts for her residents.
In 2004 Maggie was forced to retire when she had a heart attack. After retiring, Maggie enjoyed working with her hobbies and camping at the lake with family and friends. Her constant companion was her dog, Benji, who kept her company and gave her lots of unconditional love, especially after her husband, Dennis, passed away in 2021.
Maggie was a kind, caring woman and loved her family dearly. She loved to visit and appreciated every visitor that came to her home. The stories that were often told revolved around sitting at the kitchen table playing a rousing game of cards or having sing songs with friends and family all joining in. There were many parties that ended up at Maggie and Dennis‘s home. We know she will be missed dearly by her family and her many friends.
Maggie was predeceased by her parents, Pius and Barbara Deringer, husband Dennis Longpre, brothers Louie and Alex Deringer, sister Angie Graham and father and mother in-law Albert and Isabel Longpre.
Maggie is survived by her four children: Roger (Gina) Deringer of Assiniboia, Donna Frampton of Swift Current, Ken (Helen) Longpre of Martinsville, Greg Longpre of Mankota, two sisters Margaret (Gordon) Selensky of Mankota and Veronica (Brian) Gough of Lethbridge, Alberta, sister-in-law Yvonne (Paul) Larson of Pincher Creek, Alberta, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Maggie’s life will be held at the Mankota Community Hall in Mankota on December 27, 2025 at 1 PM. Lunch to follow served by the UCW.
