Mrs. Margaret Schile Zerr

Margaret Zerr (Schile) passed away August 20, 2010, at the age of 89. Predeceased by her parents Peter and Magdalena Schile, her husband Pius in 1992, two sisters Elizabeth and Anna: three brothers Joseph, George and Andrew, Margaret is survived by daughter Sister Mary Zerr (Ursuline); son Joseph (Claire) Zerr; grandsons Aaron and Dean (Cheryl); two great grandchildren; and two sisters Magdalena and Mary.

Margaret was born August 16, 1921 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and grew up in the Etzikom district where she attended Glenn Echo School. She and her sister, Mary, ventured to Lethbridge together for their first job at St. Michael’s Hospital. Being an adventurous spirited woman Margaret ventured all the way to Mankota where she helped one of her step sisters, Margaret Bechal. This is where she met the love of her life, Pius Zerr. They got married on May 13th, 1946 and had two children Mary and Joseph.

Together they made their home on the farm in the Mankota district. There she grew her plants and started her many flowers from seed. Every year Pius would make her flower plot bigger, because he loved flowers too. They were very active in parish ministry and community activities. In 1978, they retired to Assiniboia where they continued their love of square dancing and met many wonderful people.

She was a member of the CWL since 1956 and continued her association with the organization in Assiniboia. Margaret was also a member of the Hospital Auxillary for a number of years.

Once she found the bowling alley in it was hard to keep her away, until just a few years ago when she was forced to hang up her shoes, and then became more devoted to crocheting afghans and doilies.

Margaret had a strong devotion to Mother Mary as was evident in the many rosaries she led before the Sunday liturgies. That devotion gave her the strength to overcome her many difficulties in her last days. The gift of her life has been a blessing and she will be greatly missed.

Prayer Vigil was held Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 and Funeral Mass celebrated Wednesday, August 25th, 2010, both services held in St. George’s Roman Catholic Church. Celebrant was Father Gerard Montiague. Pallbearers were: Darcy Zerr, Bob Turgeon, Peter Hammel, Blain Taylor, Andrew Stappler, George Schile. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
