Sophie Hanna Schmidt

SOPHIE HANNA SCHMIDT (nee Kirchmayer) was born July 29th, 1916, on the family farm near Flintoft, Saskatchewan. She attended Dorgan School, about half a mile east of the farm. Sophie’s mother passed away when she was 16 years old, and Sophie helped her Dad look after the rest of the children. She went to work out around Gravelbourg and other places until she met John Schmidt and married him on December 26th, 1936. They had two children, a daughter, Doris Delores Schmidt, and a son, Roger August Schmidt. Sophie played the guitar and sang with Roger. She also liked to sew and crochet and knit socks and mitts and bedspreads. She kept house plants and did gardening, helping Roger with the chores and running the truck to haul wheat from the combine during harvest. Sophie was the oldest of eleven children in the family; two of her siblings passed away from the flu during infancy. Sophie was predeceased by her mother, Juliana Kirchmayer (nee Ottenbreit) in 1932; her brother, Dennis Kirchmayer in 1952; her father, August Kirchmayer in 1960; her daughter, Doris Delores Chorel (Schmidt) in 1970; her brother Art Kirchmayer in 1986; her husband John Ed Schmidt in 1988; her brother Phil Kirchmayer in 1988; step-son Don Schmidt in 1991; sister Margret Schmidt (Kirchmayer) in 1999; sister Katie Halwienzyk (Kirchmayer) in 2000; and her brother Ed Kirchmayer in 2004. Sophie is survived by one sister, Rosie Dyck; one brother, Joe (Madeline) Kirchmayer; her son Roger of McCord; and her step-son Joe of Kincaid. Prayer Vigil was held on Friday, October 21, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at Ste Radegonde Roman Catholic Church in Lafleche, SK, with Joanne Vinish presiding. Funeral Mass was celebrated the following day, October 22, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Joseph Strohhofer as celebrant. Interment followed at St. Marcel’s R.C. Cemetery, Glentworth district, SK. Donations in memory of Sophie may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
