The Spirit World gained a proud Lakota man, Stanley William Lethbridge, on Saturday, July 30th, 2022. Stanley was born February 23, 1964 in the Gravelbourg hospital, to parents Lily (Okraincee) and William Lawrence Lethbridge. Stan succumbed after a bitter fight with a cruel disease.
Stan attended school in Fir Mountain and Glentworth. His strength as a teen was very established when he won the provincial Shotput competitions. He kept school chums close, right to the end.
Stanley’s love for his sons was unmeasurable. Making lazy cabbage rolls was a way for Stan to show his love. Not to mention carrot cake. He prided himself in making homemade cake and sending half a cake in their lunches. He was proud of his sons and was excited to see what their passions were and what they excelled at. Stan’s grandchildren brought Stan so much joy.
Stan’s respect for the Lakota ways led him to learn as much as he could about traditional values and practices. His Lakota name is Lowanpi Mato (Singing Bear). Stan’s grandfather gave him this name. He was very happy when his oldest son Levi took interest in the Lakota ways. Stan is an elected Councillor for the Lakota Wood Mountain reserve. He did his best working for his community. His mom, Lily, is of Ukrainian descent. A wonderful mix of cultures.
Stan was a hardworking man that provided for his family. For 20 years, he left his family for months at a time to work in the oil industry, at the same time he also ranched and farmed. He had a passion for draft horses and wagons too. He also worked at the GRASSLANDS NATIONAL PARK, a perfect job for an outdoorsman.
Stan was an avid hunter and tanner. He completed a tanning course in Montana and a traditional Nakota smoke tanning class. He tanned with such enthusiasm and smudged as he tanned to honour the animals. Choices, a self-realization seminar was Stan’s ‘go to’ for self-improvement. He attended many seminars and encouraged his sons to attend too.
Stan ‘danced in’ at the Wood Mountain powwow with his lady friend Kim Soo Goodtrack. One of the best days of their life. Stan and Kim created a book together entitled, “Lowanpi Mato’s Tipi”.
Stan leaves behind his friend Kim Soo Goodtrack, five sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren: Levi, Jill, Jayton; Ty, Shelby, Clara, Leroy; Ryder, Tracey, Tegan, Rylan; Carson, Rafael; Craig and stepsons Dustin and Donnie, his mother Lily Lethbridge, sister Alice, brothers Gordon (Nora), Floyd (Sheila), David (Gail), many nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts and uncles. Stan is predeceased by his father Lawrence, grandparents and Uncle Pete.
Please join Stan’s family at the Community Centre Lakota Wood Mountain on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 10:00 am to celebrate his life. Interment at the Glentworth Roman Catholic Cemetery followed by fellowship and lunch at the Fir Mountain Community Hall. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.rossfuneralservice.com for the Lethbridge family. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK
