Survivors include her children and their partners, Don Barnett and Yun Suk, Jan English and Dennis, and Dan Barnett and Lisa Goodwin; her sister, June Elder Kahlert; her two grandchildren, Kevin Elder Barnett and Taylor Barnett; and four nieces and nephews.
Daughter of R. H. “Johnny” Elder and Jurelle Smith Elder of Watkinsville, Alberta was born July 20, 1931. She was known as “Miss Alberta” to her many friends, co-workers, students, and all that knew her throughout her life. Her life goal was accomplished through the lives of the three people that called her “Mom.”
The many life lessons and values that Alberta passed along to those who knew her best were learned during the long days on the Watkinsville farm. She attended Oconee County High School and Athens Business College. She supported the career of husband, Robert Donaldson “Don” Barnett, with moves around the country while attending all the school events of her kids and encouraging them all to complete college.
Alberta worked many jobs and her likeable nature and optimistic attitude led her to many management roles. She worked in grocery and restaurant management, ran a day care center, managed a portrait business, and had her own antique shop. Gardening was a huge pastime while exceling in her various competitive events. From basketball at Oconee High School to being a three time Audubon club golf champion in Williamsville, New York, Alberta was always busy and very competitive.
After “retiring” with husband, Elmer Quist, when they were not remodeling, gardening, golfing, and raising cattle, Alberta spent as much time as she could with her parents who lived adjacent to her. It was always important to Mom that the entire family share as many traditions and happy events as possible as these were always “Making Memories.”
Now Mom’s children are scattered across the country in their careers, but as they always said, “Home Is Where Mom Is.” Now Mom is Home.
