Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Jefferson Hulsey of Gainesville, Amanda was born in 1927. She earned a BA degree from Agnes Scott College, where she majored in French and English. She met the love of her life, Ramon Converse Thompson, during summer courses at Emory University following his return from serving in the 100th Infantry Division in France and Germany during WW2.
After the completion of Dr. Thompson's internship and residency, the couple moved to Athens, Georgia in 1956. As he established a medical practice in Urology, Amanda immersed herself in ministering to others through various organizations and volunteer work. Her primary goal in life was to serve others, especially "the least of these." She spent the majority of her time in charitable, philanthropic, and cultural endeavors.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Athens Junior Assembly, Crawford W. Long Medical Auxiliary, YWCO Board of Directors, Town and Gown Theatre Guild, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee Guild, and the Athens Symphony Guild.
She also volunteered at Hope Haven, Our Daily Bread, The Moina Michael Clinic, and the Salvation Army, among others.
She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Athens where she served as deacon, elder, and President of the Women of the Church. She greatly enjoyed being a member of Circle 1.
Amanda also enjoyed her bridge groups, Road Runners, The Georgia Museum of Art, classical music, and travel. She was known as a gracious hostess, and loved opening her home to her many friends.
In 1976, Mrs. Thompson and two close friends opened The Bridal Gallery in Athens, where it was her joy to assist many Georgia brides through every part of the wedding process.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Thompson Arnold (Brooks) and Kelly Thompson Hughes (Mitch); their children, Katherine Arnold Wolf (Jay), Amie Arnold, Grace Arnold, Michelle Hughes Richmond (Patrick), Morgan Thompson Hughes, and Melanie Hughes. She is also survived by her 5 siblings Sarah Hulsey Reeves, Mariben Hulsey O'Brien, Joyce Hulsey Minor (Eddie), Benjamin Jefferson Hulsey (Dorothy), and Julius M. Hulsey, 12 nieces and nephews, and 4 great-grandchildren.
A worship service in her honor will be held on Wednesday, May 2, at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Amanda's favorite charities: Hope Heals, (HopeHeals.com), her oldest granddaughter's ministry; The Salvation Army, or Habitat for Humanity.
