

Herb Bennett was born in Washington County, Georgia on February 29, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents, Car Lou Lea Bruner and Arthur Alexander Bennett, his daughter, Marilyn Susan Bennett, and his brother, Donald Bruner Bennett. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Sarah Moore Bennett, one daughter, Carolyn Elizabeth Carter, three sons, Arthur Herbert Bennett, Jr, John Landus Bennett (Martha), and Joseph Anthony Bennett; seven grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Bolding and Dorothy Rose Padgett.
Herb grew up on a farm outside of Sandersville where his father was in the dairy and poultry business. He graduated from Sandersville High School in 1940. In November of 1942 he joined the United States Army Air Corps where he served until February 1946. In 1950, in the little Methodist Church in Warthen, GA, he married the girl he was to spend the rest of his life with and in 1952 he graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS degree in agricultural engineering. After a short stint with the Highway Department of Georgia he took a job with the Agricultural Marketing Service of the US Department of Agriculture, located at the University of Georgia. He was later transferred to Cornell University, first at the Long Island Vegetable Research Farm and from there to the Cornell University Campus where he received his Master of Science in Engineering. In 1959 he moved back to Athens with his family, became a registered professional engineer, and eventually ended up as a Research Leader at the Russell Research Center, from which he retired in 1980. After retirement he worked 12 years as a manufacturer’s representative for Kramer Refrigeration Company, Trenton, NJ.
During his working years he was active with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. As a result of his work with ASHRAE he received several Certificates of Appreciation, the Distinguished Service Award, and in 1983 was advanced to the grade of Fellow in the Society. In 2013, he was honored with a 50 Year Distinguished Service Award.
Memorial services will be held 2PM Thursday, February 5th at Friendship Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Wednesday, February 4th at Bernstein Funeral Home.
