

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hal and Allee Cartey; a brother, Weyman Cartey; a sister, Hilda Cartey Belflower; his wife, Blanche Lester Cartey, and a grandson, David D Hutchins III.
A native of Athens, Mr. Cartey was one of the first University of Georgia Police Officers and retired from UGA as Chemistry building supervisor. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II and later served in the US Coast Guard. He was an avid hunter, historian, artist, and square dancer. In retirement, he and his late wife Blanch enjoyed dining with their many friends at the St. Mary’s Hospital Cafeteria and was a member of Prince Ave Baptist Church for over 40 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Sherry Heard of Athens; two granddaughters, Tami Hutchins Keanum and Wendy Hutchins Crosson; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11AM Wednesday, June 9th at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev Ray Finger officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Tuesday, June 8th at Bernstein Funeral Home.
The family will be at the Belflower residence, 545 Forest Heights Dr, Athens, GA 30606.
