

Bobbie Tracey Oliver, age 92, died Monday, January 12, 2015. She was a resident of the Athens, GA area for the last 43 years. Prior to that time, she lived in Atlanta, GA, Chattanooga, TN and Wilmington, NC. She was the eldest of three children born to Atlee V. Tracey and Robbie Lee Jackson Tracey of Atlanta, GA.
She was wife to the late Alfred William (AW) Oliver a native of Athens, GA whose career was with the DuPont Company. Two of Bobbie’s siblings preceded her in death: Helen Phillips of Crystal River, FL and Atlee V (Bud) Tracey, Jr. of Alpharetta, GA.
Bobbie was a loving mother, homemaker, and an advocate for many causes. A lifelong goal was to improve conditions for others at the local and national level. She was an advocate for children and spearheaded the development of the first Headstart Program in Wilmington, NC. She was instrumental in writing the initial grants for the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Athens, GA. Her passion for accountable political ethics was evidenced by her long association with the League of Women Voters, Common Cause and Beyond War.
Bobbie was actively involved at Central Presbyterian Church, Athens, GA as Elder of Missions. In later years she enjoyed attending Oconee Presbyterian Church, Watkinsville, GA. She was dedicated to promoting spiritual growth and biblical knowledge through teaching and action. Besides her love of family she enjoyed travel, reading, music, art, and a love of the mountains.
She is survived by her four children: Richard Oliver and wife Jane of Maryville, MO; Paul Oliver and wife Nancy of Soddy-Daisy, TN; Marilyn O. Carter and husband Jimmy Carter of Burgaw, NC; and Joan O. Register of Watkinsville, GA; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A service honoring the life of Bobbie Oliver will be held at Oconee Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville, GA on Saturday, January 24, at 1:00 pm, with visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers Bobbie asked that contribution be made to Oconee Presbyterian Church, 2601 Hog Mountain Road, PO Box 1377, Watkinsville, GA 30677 for future mission projects.
