Doug Atkinson, 59, of Athens, passed away on July 11, 2016. He was the son of William S. Atkinson and the late Nancy Effinger Atkinson of Augusta. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jim Atkinson; sister, Carrie Atkinson Smyth; and nephew, Tripper Mischel.
He is survived by his son, J. Edward Atkinson; daughter, Isabel Atkinson; brother, Bob Atkinson; sister, Jennie Atkinson Mischel (Trip); brother-in-law, Steve Smyth; nieces, Ivey Mischel Gibb (Luke) and Alexa Atkinson; nephew, Brooks Mischel; and ex-wife and good friend, Susan Brown.
Doug was employed by the Marine Extension Service at UGA where his diligent efforts to improve water quality had a profound effect on coastal Georgia.
His last evening was spent watching the final match of UEFA Euro 2016 soccer championship surrounded by family, engaged in lively conversation. His family cherishes this memory.
Doug was not only passionate about family and soccer, but also about the environment and leading a life enriched by friends. His love of movement and music was evident in his commitment to yoga, partner dancing (he was excellent), singing, and the contra dance, swing dance, and Lindy Hop communities. He is already sorely missed, especially his rendition of “Kansas City” at the All Star Jam.
A celebration of Doug's life will be Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens, 780 Timothy Road, Athens, GA 30606.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UGA Foundation Marine Extension Fund, 394 S. Milledge Ave., Athens, GA 30602, or a charity of your choice.
