Douglas was the tenth and youngest child of James L. and Mattie Pearl Huff Beavers of Athens.
He leaves behind four children: Bonita; Douglas Jr; Kenneth and Martin, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Tara. He is also survived by fifteen grand-children and ten great-grand children as well as the canned sausage industry for which he was an unofficial spokesman until his cardiologist threatened to quit. Dietary restrictions finally forced him to eat real food in his final years.
Doug was a very unique individual. As a long haired child of the sixties, he dutifully questioned authority and searched for the deeper meaning of all things. He would whimsically state that he was the reincarnation of Genghis Khan. He was incredibly articulate and a visionary. Renaissance man and genius would be appropriate descriptions.
Doug was a U.S. Navy veteran having served eight years before the mast. He spent four years on Aircraft Carriers and four years at the Naval Air Facility in Naples, Italy. He was a lover of all things Italian and re-visited Italy a number of times before his death, most recently with his daughter, Bonita, last year. He was a Pilot with many ratings and an accomplished computer programmer.
Doug was married four times. The longest he was hitched was ten years but we have learned that other women were planning his capture at the time of his death.
We can imagine Doug now at peace hanging out with his best friend, Roscoe, his 90 pound American Staffordshire (who passed a few years ago), smoking a hand-rolled cigarette, drinking a strong cup of coffee or snifter of cognac, and philosophizing in ways more than `twenty words or less' allows. In the interest of public health concerns, the memorial service will be re-scheduled at a later date. Burial at Mizpah Cemetery on Jefferson River Road in Jackson County will follow at a later date.
Due to his age and health conditions, Doug provided the following words prior to his passing:
My Passport doesn't require a photograph;
When I go to Spain I chase the bulls;
Sharks have a week dedicated to me;
I was the most interesting man in the world. Stay thirsty my friends!
Doug said: "I'm leaving you with these thoughts, Please don't cry because I'm gone; instead be happy that I was here. Or maybe you can cry a little, after all it is a funeral. Today I am happy and I am dancing. Pushing the young ladies away.”
