
She was born in Shellman, Georgia, June 5, 1916 to Dr. Albert Leroy Crittenden, Sr. and Georgia Pearl Read. She was the youngest sister of four children: Virginia Crittenden Adams, Albert Leroy Crittenden, Jr., and her twin, Anna Crittenden Cooper. All have preceded her in death.
She served in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. She received an honorable discharge and started her civilian career.
She married Joseph A. Stapler on April 15, 1950. He preceded her in death on November 20, 1971. After her husband’s death, she continued working as a civilian Federal employee at Ft. McPherson. She put both daughters through college.
She was a member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church, the First United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville and the First Methodist Church in Dublin, Georgia, before moving to Athens and living at St. Mary’s Highland Hills. She most recently resided at Mulberry Grove Assisted Living Facility in Statham.
She is survived by two daughters, E.J. Stapler and Phyllis Stapler, and granddaughter Kasey Nichole Lillian Stapler, in addition to many cousins, primarily in Georgia and the Southeastern United States.
Family and friends will observe a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, at Hillcrest Cemetery in East Point.
