

A native Athenian, Gerald was the son of the late George Guntharp and Eler Holder Guntharp. He attended Athens High School and joined the United States Air Force as an Air Police. Following his military service, he continued his law enforcement career with the University of Georgia Police Department and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. He joined the Clarke County Police Department upon its formation in 1974 and retired as a Major in the Investigations Division of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in 1992. Gerald served four years as Chief Deputy of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office after retiring from Athens-Clarke County. He was a loving father and grandfather and loved his pets.
Survivors include sons: Jeff Guntharp (Laura) and Craig Guntharp (Tracy), both of Hull; brothers: Tommy Guntharp of Watkinsville and Jim Guntharp (Joyce) of Marietta; sister, Barbara Brown; grandchildren: Tracey Guntharp, Evan Guntharp and Abigail Guntharp; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday, February 3, at 2:00 p.m., at Evergreen Memorial Park, with Rev. Dave Smith officiating.
The family expresses its thanks to Kendra, Ansley and the other caregivers at Avery Village, as well as Tammy and Tandi, with Bridgeway Hospice for their loving care.
