Hal was born in Buffalo, NY in 1948 and graduated from Kensington High School in 1966. He served in the Army for several years as a journalist in Vietnam. He attended and graduated with a journalism degree from California State University at Northridge. He worked as an editor and writer in Los Angeles. He went to Athens, Georgia in 1991 and received his Teachers Certificate from College of Education at the University of Georgia and taught primary school until he retired. He worked with Habitat for Humanity as a roofer for many years. He authored two fiction books and wrote editorials for the University paper and the local Athens Banner-Herald newspaper.
He is survived by siblings: Jo and Paul.
