Horace William (“Billy Bump”) Garrison, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on September 28, 1940, in Athens, Georgia, to H.W. Garrison Jr. and Kathleen Williams Garrison, Billy had recently moved back to the city he loved. He graduated from Athens High School in 1958, where he made lasting friendships and earned a reputation as a kind and dependable young man.
After high school, Billy proudly served in the U.S. Navy, where he continued to exemplify his strong work ethic and sense of duty. Upon returning home, he attended the University of Georgia, where he furthered his education and deepened his connection to his beloved Bulldawg roots.
Billy’s love for life was matched by his devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Pat Tucker Garrison, his daughter, Shelley Garrison White, and his son, William Garrison and daughter-in-law, Izaura Garrison. He also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Katie White, Istvan Garrison and Ildiko Garrison. Billy is also survived by his sister, Janice Garrison, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
A man of remarkable character, Billy dedicated countless hours to giving back to his community. For many years, he donated blood every month, earning a reputation as a quiet, generous volunteer who helped save many lives. His kindness was not limited to just his charitable efforts–Billy was a friend to all and always made time for those in need, providing a steady hand and a listening ear. He was always willing to help family and friends when they needed it, and he had a generous heart.
In his leisure time, Billy was an avid golfer and fisherman, pursuits that allowed him to connect with the outdoors and with those he loved. He could often be found on the greens or near a tranquil lake, enjoying the peace that these activities provided. Whether on the course or casting a line, Billy’s zest for life was evident in everything he did.
Billy will be remembered as a very good person–a man who lived with integrity, who cared deeply for his family, and who left the world a little better through his countless acts of kindness. He was a very funny person with a penchant for one-liners and dad jokes; his sense of humor was one of his defining characteristics. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced.
If you wish, you may make donations in Billy’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project, two organizations that were dear to his heart.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
