Jim was born on August 8, 1944 in The Bronx, New York, to James and Mary (Lennon) Harrington. His parents were Irish immigrants who instilled in him a deep love of family and heritage, as well as a strong belief in the value of hard work. He was the youngest of four children and the only son.
On June 11, 1966, Jim married Peggy Fogarty whom he met in their 17th year while they were working as Catholic Youth Organization camp counselors. Together, they built a life grounded in humor, curiosity, and partnership while raising three daughters.
Jim was a graduate of Manhattan College, class of 1966. Due to his extraordinary work ethic and determination, he went on to have a successful career as a CPA. He began his career at Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery immediately after graduation and remained with the firm throughout its evolution, ultimately becoming a Partner and retiring from PricewaterhouseCoopers after a distinguished career.
Jim had a quiet curiosity shown through his avid reading. In his spare time, he was rarely without a book—or two—in progress. His favorite subject was history and in particular…Irish history. He was an expert in Irish history and could likely teach a seminar on the subject rivaling that of any tenured professor.
Jim loved to cook. Anyone lucky enough to visit him in Montauk after he had made a trip to Arthur Avenue in The Bronx was in for a treat. He loved to share good food paired with a fine glass of wine, especially his favorite Brunello di Montepulciano.
Above all, Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was devoted to his family and found joy in being surrounded by them. He had seven grandchildren each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. His happiest place was Montauk, New York, where he created countless memories with his family. There he taught his grandchildren how to swim and navigate the waves, fill bird feeders so they could marvel at nature together, and simply enjoyed the presence of those he loved most.
Jim will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and love for his family. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his daughters and sons-in-law: Peggy and David Webb of San Diego, CA; Kathleen and Jim Siekman of Charlotte, NC; and Jennifer Harrington and Bryan Torres of Athens, GA; and his seven grandchildren: Siobhan Webb, Brenna Webb, Liam Webb, Madison Siekman, Riley Siekman, James Torres, and Fionn Torres. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Malone and Sheila Kissane. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Theresa McEnroe.
