He and his family moved to Winder, Georgia when he was fifteen. He was a graduate of Winder-Barrow High School and the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Education. While at UGA, he played trombone in the Redcoat Marching Band.
After college, he began his career as an elementary school teacher in the Barrow County School System. In 1982 he began working in the Central Administration of the Jackson County School System where he worked for thirty years until he retired as Assistant Superintendent in 2012. At age fifty, he went back to school to obtain his Doctor of Education. Amongst all his many degrees and accomplishments as an educator, he was proudest of his family.
He loved being a husband to Sarah Hollis Greene, father to his two daughters and grandfather to his four grandchildren who all affectionately refer to him as “Pop.” His unwavering loyalty, kind smile and quiet steady demeanor will be missed by many, especially his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Greene of Athens; daughter, Rebecca Greene Sartor (Bob) of Athens; daughter, Elizabeth Greene Peterson (Hugh) of Atlanta; grandchildren, Robert William “Will” Sartor, Caroline Elizabeth Sartor of Athens, Sarah Jane Peterson and Katherine Patience Peterson of Atlanta; sister, Patti Sanchez Meador (Ray) of Lilburn, Georgia and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, James Clarence Sanchez; his mother, Helen Lyle Sanchez; and his brother, Joseph Lyle Sanchez.
A visitation will be held Friday, June 24 from 5-7 p.m. at the home of Rebecca and Bob Sartor in Athens, Georgia.
