She was born on the family farm in Lee County, Georgia, to Edgar Taylor Long and Alice Clara Hays Long on February 26, 1922, the last of their seven children to be born, and the last to pass away. Louise was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Richard Carlton Newcomb (1997). They had four children, Ronald C. Newcomb (and Diana Lynn) of Smyrna, GA, Richard A. Newcomb (deceased) of Chattanooga, TN, Robert K. Newcomb (spouse Karen Newcomb) of Comer, GA, and Ruth M. Newcomb (spouse Fred Breme) of Watkinsville, GA; two grandchildren, Zachary Newcomb, and Alison Avera; and two great-grandchildren, Maya and Mikayla.
She graduated from Lee County High School, and graduated top in her class from Middle Georgia Hospital School of Nursing, in 1943. As a registered nurse, she was dedicated to caring for others, and worked most of her career at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany, GA. She balanced her steadfast commitment to the nursing profession with her intense devotion to her husband and their children; it speaks volumes that for many years she worked overnight shifts as a nurse and yet found the energy daily to transport four children to St. Teresa’s Catholic School. Later in life, she was very proud of the fact that all four of her children graduated from college.
In her contacts with all persons, her gentleness, caring, and compassion showed itself, and others could feel it; she loved most, and most loved her. This could be seen, too, in her affection for animals; throughout her life there was a series of dogs who were beloved by her, and this has been a trait passed on to her children.
