Mark Steven Dodson, beloved husband and father, passed away on Monday, September 11, from complications of primary progressive aphasia. He was born December 2, 1959, to Justus Kenneth Dodson and Dana Barnes Dodson in Hackensack, New Jersey, and spent many of his formative years in Naples, Florida.
Mark graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 1981 and had a long career as a graphic designer, working for newspapers and ad agencies. He eventually retired from the University of Georgia, working much of that time for his friend and mentor Jerry NeSmith. Mark also did a variety of freelance work and was especially devoted to being the editor of FreeWheelin’, the publication of the Southern Bicycle League (Atlanta), for more than a decade.
He was an avid touring cyclist and rode Bike Ride Across Georgia for many years, in addition to other cross-state rides as varied as South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida. He also advocated for cycling locally, volunteering for BikeAthens in leadership roles. He rose through the ranks of Toastmasters International, which he originally joined as a way to combat his shyness.
For many years, Mark served as a lay reader and usher at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and he especially enjoyed working the sound board there with his friend Erwin. He was a student of politics and current events. He had a crackling dry wit, but could be as silly as they come, especially with his beloved boys.
Mark loved animals, and animals loved him. The neighbor’s beagle Buddy, often ran away to see him. A variety of house cats shared his home through the years, and if Mark sat down, Wesley, Geoffrey, or later, Sidney, was in his lap right away.
Mark is survived by Linda, his wife of 23 years, and by his sons: Graham and Clayton. His parents and his brother, Roger, preceded him in death.
Mark’s family is especially grateful for Brittany, Kamina, Michael, Shika, and Talesha at Avery Place; Angie, Stephanie, and all of the caregivers at Hampton House who loved and cared for him; and for his nurse Debra Kriner.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 27, at 11:00 a.m., at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to The Association of Frontotemporal Degeneration (theaftd.org), BikeAthens, or Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
