Martha Nan Meyer, 88, passed away on December 26, 2015 after an extended illness. She was born in Bogart, Georgia on September 11, 1927 to the late W. Jack Malcom and Ola Busha Malcom. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Douglas H. Meyer and by her sister, Gloria Jean Malcom Harrison.
Her family and her music were the joys of her life. She was a charter member of the Athens Choral Society and long-time active member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, played piano for Sunday School every week, and was a member of the Jewell class. She loved any activity involving her family, and her daughters and grandchildren cherish the memory of gatherings spent over the years with her at her home and on family vacations.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, crossword puzzles, playing cards, traveling, participating in the LIFT group, walking every morning with The Walkie Talkies, and holding court afterwards as the Queen of Panera. Earlier in life, she was a charter member of Beech Haven Baptist Church (as a mission of First Baptist) and attended Athens High School and the University of Georgia.
Her sense of humor and knack for subtle commentary will be missed by her family and friends, who always knew exactly what was on her mind. She was the mother to four daughters: Jacola Bolger (George) of Bluffton, SC, Carol Sue Meech (Paul) of Athens, Marty Kseniak (Mark) of Bluffton, SC, and Julie Hanna (Mark) of Athens. She was a constant presence in the lives of her four grandchildren: Britt Bulla (Paul Cirone), Brad Bulla (Vera), Wendy Hanna Sparks (Charlie), and Lori Hanna. She also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Pat Harrison (Mary Helen) of Montgomery, AL, and many nieces, nephews and close friends of the family.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to her caregivers from Oconee Area Home Care for the love, attention and comfort they brought to her and the family.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 29 at 2:00PM at First Baptist Church in Athens. The Rev. Dr. Paul Baxley will officiate. Private interment will be at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
