Mary D. Platz

Mary D. Platz, formerly known as Mary D. Martin, age 88, of Watkinsville, Georgia, passed away May 29, 2015. A resident of the Athens area since 2006, she had previously resided for several years in Mableton, Georgia, and for several years in Fayetteville, Georgia. Ms. Platz was the widow of Hubert Ray Martin, Hilton Brantley Summers, Jr., and Leslie Avery Platz.

Born Mary Elizabeth Driskell November 9, 1926, in Arcadia, Florida, her parents were Reverend Lovick Pierce Driskell and Pearl Adeline Goddard Driskell. She was the youngest of five children, and was predeceased by her two sisters, Wilda Floy Driskell Smith and Vera Sue Driskell Bozeman, and her two brothers, Wylie Lovick Driskell and Reverend Owen Cornelius Driskell.

She was educated at Emory School of Nursing, Decatur, Georgia, and Woodrow Wilson School of Law, Atlanta, Georgia. She was employed by Dixie Bearings, Inc. as an executive secretary for 31 years.

Survivors include her two daughters, Anne M. Bernstein of Athens, Georgia and Elizabeth M. Wike of Wilmington, North Carolina, sister-in-law, Nancy Driskell of Interlachen, Florida, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 3:30PM Sunday, May 31st in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:30-3:30PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
