Mildred Ophelia Smith McLeroy

Mrs. McLeroy was born in Glascock County on April 6, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Arch Daniel and Susie Wren Smith of Warrenton, GA. Mrs. McLeroy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Henry G McLeroy Jr and a great-grandchild, Brett Ashton McCrary. She was the last remaining sibling of nine children.

Mrs. McLeroy was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Athens and was a member of the BYKOTA class.

She helped her husband start McLeroy Plumbing in 1948 where she continued to work as office manager until her retirement in 1979.

Mrs. McLeroy is survived by a very loving family who will miss her greatly. She was known for her kind and giving heart and her wonderful cooking. Most notably, her chocolate chip cookies. She always had cookies ready to give to family and friends when they stopped by. She also treasured getting together with her group of friends know as the “Mountain Group.”

Survivors include three children, daughters, Gloria McCrary and Mary Ann(Phillip) Maxwell; son, Henry(Janice) G McLeroy III; eight grandchildren, Blake(Patti) McCrary, Chuck(Carmen) McCrary, Greg(Connie) McCrary, Corey(Lindsay) McLeroy, Courtney(Ben) Thomas, Jon Maxwell, Brian(Amanda) Maxwell, Cassie Maxwell(Carl Kitchen, fiancé); ten great-grandchildren, Michael(Nina) Schwartz, Brittany McCrary, Christofer McCrary, Carli McCrary, Delaney McCrary, Beth Ann McCrary, Caroline Thomas, Allison Thomas, Will McLeroy, Mia Hilley. Also a loving circle of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. McLeroy’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The funeral service will be held 2PM Thursday, April 28th at the First Christian Church, 268 West Dougherty Street, Athens, GA with Rev Alan Mace and Rev Ray Austin officiating. Burial will be follow at Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Wednesday, April 27th at Bernstein Funeral Home, Atlanta Hwy, Athens, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund at First Christian Church, Athens, GA.

The family would like to thank the staff at Athens Heritage for the wonderful care they provided to Mrs. McLeroy for the past 16 months.
