Our beautiful boy, Nathaniel (aka, Nate, Nat, Nathan, Nathanananiel) tragically ended his own life after a recent struggle with serious mental illness. He was a luminous, joyful soul whose amazing smile brightened every room and warmed the heart of everyone who met him. With a love language of “quality time,” Nate could be found every evening and weekend spending time with family, including his dad Eric, his mom Erika, and his five siblings, Alex (age 32), Meredith (28), Greyson (12), Kate (8), and Ben (8). Whether initiating a spontaneous dance party with his younger siblings, playing board games for unending hours, or watching the Lord of the Rings for the ten millionth time, Nathaniel was always focused on meeting the needs of others. He was officially the ONLY person willing to play Monopoly with his 8-year-old siblings.
Nathaniel was born in Cary, NC on May 4, 2000. While perhaps not a competition, Nathaniel was absolutely the most adorable baby and toddler on earth. Trust us, we have video evidence.
He attended Johns Creek High School from 2014 to 2018, where he graduated in the top 1% of his class, was voted Homecoming King, and received the “Most Likely to Brighten Your Day” senior superlative. A National Merit Scholarship recipient, Nathaniel also received a full academic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Computer Science and a Statistics minor in May 2022.
Nate was actively involved in the LGBTQIA+ community. He led the Johns Creek Gay-Straight Alliance for several years and served as a member of the 2017-2018 GLSEN National Student Council. His advocacy for and within the queer community at the local, state, and national levels inspired and impacted many. A friend to all, Nate was also an animal rights advocate and frequently volunteered at animal shelters while in high school.
Nate was recruited by a large consulting firm as a college senior and worked on major client projects from July 2022 to August 2023, and helped organize and lead the company’s 2022 Atlanta Pride participation. He had recently joined the University of Georgia’s IT team as a Systems Support Analyst.
Nate loved spending time with his immediate and extended family as well as his friends. This included his beloved trips to the Outer Banks of NC for Thanksgiving week, spring breaks in Florida, and camping and blueberry picking in North Georgia. He leaves behind far too many who grieve his loss. His energy, spirit, kindness, grace, and love touched everyone he knew.
Nathaniel is survived by his parents (Eric and Erika Fulmer), sister and brother-in-law (Alex and Noah Hill), sister and soon-to-be brother-in-law (Meredith Fulmer and John Wrobel), brother (Greyson), sister (Kate), brother (Ben), Grandma Chris (Christine Fulmer), Grandpa Ed (Edward Fulmer), Grandma Judy (Judith Keller), aunt and uncle (Tammy and Del Schumacher), aunt and uncle (Kelly and Jim Geurts), aunt and uncle (Trina and Jack Murphy), and cousins (Lauren & Anis, Jimmy & Brandon, Connor & Devon & Mason).
Nathaniel’s family is eternally thankful for the kindness and care of the first responders and professionals who supported our family on the scene and took amazing care of our sweet boy. Special love and gratitude to “Coach” Julie Harrison and the Madison County Coroner’s Office.
