Phillip Terrell Chitwood, 61, an Athens native and a resident of Jefferson, GA, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024. He is survived by Kelly Moss Chitwood, his wife of 33 years, and his son, James Richard Lee Chitwood of Boston, MA. Phillip is also survived by his mother, Martha Bernese Chitwood of Athens, GA; his brother, Mark Cornelius Chitwood, of Lawrenceville, GA; and his nieces Beth Chitwood Newey, Emily Chitwood, and Carrie Chitwood – all of the greater Athens, GA, area. Phillip’s father, Richard Chitwood, and his eldest brother, Richard (Dickie) Chitwood, preceded him in death.
Phillip had a distinguished career as an electronics engineer. He rose from his first position as a technician and service manager at ME Diversified Electronics in Athens, GA, to electronics specialist at Jackson EMC in Jefferson, GA.
Phillip was recruited to Northeast Mountain Radio in Rutland, VT, as general manager. Finally, he joined Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) in Rutland where he worked for over 20 years as an electronics engineer. He conceived, designed, and installed telecommunications systems spanning the whole of Vermont.
Phillip enjoyed photography and became an accomplished wildlife photographer. His work appeared in promotional material for the Vermont Institute of National Science (VINS), including museum quality portraits appearing at VINS and galleries around the state. He also conducted studio work with fashion models, some of whom gained national prominence.
Along with his wife, Kelly, Phillip rescued dozens of dogs. He always shared his home with canine and feline companions. He actively supported several animal welfare societies, especially Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
Above all, Phillip was a devoted family man, who made countless sacrifices for his wife and son and loved them unconditionally. A man of few words, he tended to act rather than speak. Family, friends, and strangers in need benefitted from his compassion and generosity. Phillip’s dry wit brightened the lives of those who knew him well.
Phillip will be laid to rest in Oconee Hill Cemetery on Friday, February 2, 2024 following a 2:00 PM funeral service at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Rhett B. Solomon officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Rd, Kanab, UT 84741.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
