Mrs. Rosemary Armour Salter, aged 72, beloved matriarch of our family, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 3, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, following a lengthy decline in health and a brief illness. Born in Washington, Georgia, she was the only child of Everett and Louise Armour. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Wallace Salter; as well as daughter Marsy Boyd (Jay) of Athens; son Brant McWhorter of Banner Elk, NC and stepson Bruce Salter (Sara) of Panama City, FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.
Rosemary spent her formative years in Madison, Georgia, often in the company of the many other “only child” girls her age, which seemed to be En vogue in this town during the 1950’s. Following this pleasant childhood, she blossomed into a beautiful, personable girl during her high school years. She was an outstanding student who not only excelled in the classroom, but was a varsity cheerleader and a talented pianist, often serving as an accompanist for the school glee club as well as playing in literary competitions. Her charming personality and attractiveness did not go unnoticed as she matured, with notable successes in local beauty contests.
During her college years, she first attended Emory at Oxford, gaining some local notoriety with “Dooley”, the school’s unofficial mascot, as he searched for a chink in Rosemary’s “Armour”. She concluded her undergraduate and graduate studies at UGA, majoring in psychology and education, which would be the perfect preparation for her lifetime career as a school counselor. While at UGA, Rosemary was very active socially as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and as sweetheart of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.
Following graduation, Mrs. Salter began an almost four-decade-long career in public education, with the majority of her years spent as a middle school counselor in the Clarke County School District. One of her proudest moments was being recognized as the Tenth District Middle School Counselor of the year in 1980.
She retired in 2009, and began a fun-filled life of visiting grandkids and playing lots and lots of crossword puzzles, solitaire and Sudoku.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan B. Komen for the Cure organization.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
