Ruth Rebecca Esposito was born June 10, 1922 to Myrtha and Letcher Simpson in Danville, Virginia. She moved to Athens, Georgia in 2005 to be near her family and lived here until her death on May 24, 2011.
Her life was defined by her commitment to her family. She was most proud of her role as mother, grandmother and aunt and as the wife of a Brig. Gen. in the United States Air Force.
Her two daughters Sharon M. Esposito MD and Carolyn E. Stephens Ph.D., her son-in-law Robert G. Stephens III M.D. and 3 grandchildren Brendan A. Stephens, Rebecca W. Stephens and Alexander M. Stephens, all of Athens, Georgia, survive her. Her step grandchildren are Robert G. Stephens IV Ph.D. and John R. Stephens M.D. She is also survived by her sister Edith Joyce of Greensboro, N.C. and her 3 nieces and 4 nephews to whom she was a faithful and beloved Aunt. Preceding her in death were her father, mother and 3 brothers.
Family and friends will be able to pay respects and visit her family at Bernstein’s Funeral Home (Atlanta Highway) on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 5-6 PM. Funeral services will take place in Danville, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Autism Speaks.
