Born in Athens on February 20, 1921, he was the son of the late William Edward Hopkins, Sr. and Bess Belser Hopkins.
Bill graduated from Athens High School and attended the University of Georgia until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served aboard the LST 1080 in the Pacific. Before leaving, he married his childhood sweetheart Bess Cabaniss.
Bill’s many years with Coca-Cola, next to his family, gave him great pleasure and satisfaction. He was active in the community and a member of the Athens First Presbyterian Church, Athens Rotary Club, the Board of Trustees of Oconee Hill Cemetery, the Touchdown Club, and Athens Country Club. His many interests included his family, gardening, reading, traveling, and playing golf. Everyone who met him will remember his warm smile and loving personality.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 70 years, Bess Cabaniss Hopkins, son William Edward Hopkins III (Ann) of Destin, FL, daughter Betsy Preslar (Ron) of Hickory, N.C., and loving grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Much gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful staff of Mulberry Grove Assisted Living, nurses at Gentiva Hospice, and loving caregiver Beverly Adkins.
Graveside service will be held on January 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Oconee Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception for family and friends at the Sexton House.
