Alexander “Mac” McClusky Johnston, 96, died peacefully on Feb. 5, 2011. Mac was the son of Richard H. Johnston and Marjorie (McClusky) Johnston, and brother of Walter Johnston, all who predeceased him. Mac spent much of his life in the Midwest, working for Amoco and raising a family with his beloved wife Ruth (Chepa) Johnston. They were transferred to Atlanta in 1973, joined St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, where Mac served as Senior Warden, and decided to retire here so Mac could take advantage of the long golf season. Following Ruth’s passing in 1987, Mac moved to Canterbury Court, where his favorite pastimes were playing cards and singing barbershop harmonies with the “Canterbury Four.” In 1995, Mac married Anna (McElroy) Fowlkes, who brought him much happiness; Anna’s extended family has been a great source of support and comfort to Mac since her death in 2000. Survivors include daughters Jacquelyn (John) Williams and Debra (Tom) Buesing; grandchildren Katherine Rose Buesing, Brian Alexander Buesing, and John Scott Williams; nephew Richard Johnston and nieces Patricia Johnston, Jan Ellen Johnston, and Dawn (Chepa) Buehner. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to the Canterbury Court Residents’ Endowment Fund or to the Endowment Fund at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church. Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Martin’s, Father John McCard officiating. Friends may greet the family in the church parlor beginning at 12:30 p.m.
