
Betty Akerman Shackleford, a native Atlantan died on September 19, 2011. She was born on October 19, 1933. Her parents were Ben and Lucille Timmons Akerman. Betty graduated from North Fulton High School. She received a B.A. from Agnes Scott College and a Masters degree from Georgia State University. She taught second grade at Morningside Elementary in the Atlanta school system from 1955 to 1959. She then resumed teaching in 1973 at Heritage Elementary and Woodward Elementary in Dekalb County. She was an active member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church, Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Georgia Genealogical Society. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 22nd at 2 o’clock at Shallowford Presbyterian Church with a reception following the service. A family service will be held at Arlington Cemetery Mausoleum. Those wishing to do so may send memorial gifts to Shallowford Presbyterian Church, PAWS Atlanta or Carroll County, or the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. She is survived by her three children Elizabeth Shackleford of Athens, Georgia, Celia Shackleford Booher (her husband, Mark) of Carmel, Indiana, and Benjamin Akerman Shackleford (wife, Robin) of Atlanta and eight grandchildren. The family will receive friends Wednesday, evening from 6 to 8 at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia, 30319.
