

Blanche Carney Smith, of Atlanta, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Born on January 9, 1928 to the late J. Sherman and Ambra Cline Carney in Ball Ground, GA, Blanche was a strong, caring and selfless wife, mother, and friend who loved animals, flowers, music and helping others. Blanche graduated from Canton High School and studied at Mercer University in Macon, GA and Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA before starting her career. She worked in several roles for the Georgia Department of Corrections and retired as a Court Liaison Officer in 1981 after 34 years of faithful service. Blanche was a member of Peachtree Baptist Church in Atlanta, where she taught preschool age Sunday School classes for many years. Blanche is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J. Harmon Smith; brothers, Hugh C. Carney and O. Guy Carney. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Brian and Karen Hampton of Atlanta; sister, Ruth Carney Grogan of Atlanta; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 20th at 1 o’clock at Arlington Memorial Park. Flowers are appreciated, or those desiring may make donations to the Atlanta Humane Society (www.atlantahumane.org) or any charity of choice.
