

Carolyn Latimer Harvley, age 100 and a native of Metasville, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, October 11 in Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, O. E. Harvley, her parents, Carrie Butler Latimer and Henry Roger Latimer, her sisters Louise, Camille, Estelle, and Frances and her brothers, Butler and Charles. Survivors include a son, Charles Everett Harvley of Atlanta, a daughter, Zena Camille Harvley-Felder (Tom) of Fredericksburg, VA, a grandson, Andrew Harvley-Felder of Virginia Beach, VA and a granddaughter, Irene Buckley (Chris) of Richmond, VA. Carolyn was an honor graduate of Washington High School and the University of Georgia, where she received her B.S.H.E. degree. At the University, she was a member of the Sigma Pi Psi Literary Society, Chemistry Club, and Home Economics Club. She was president of the freshman Y.W.C.A., vice-president of the Sigma Pi Psi, secretary of the home economics club, treasurer of the Y.W.C.A., a member of the Baptist Student Council and a student deaconess of the First Baptist church. Carolyn worked as a teacher, county home demonstration agent, and homemaker in Georgia. In Atlanta, Carolyn was president of the Women’s Missionary Union at First Baptist Church and gave the first World Day of Prayer message on radio. She was a leader professionally, in church, and in the community. After moving to Texas, where her husband was stationed with the Air Force during the Korean War, Carolyn was a home economics teacher at South Oak Cliff high school in Dallas. She received her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Texas Christian University in 1965 and became a school counselor, serving at Justin F. Kimball and Bryan Adams high schools. She served faithfully, teaching youth and adults at Cliff Temple Baptist Church in Oak Cliff. She was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society for key women educators for more than fifty-five years and held many leadership positions. Carolyn will be missed by all who knew her. A family service of remembrance will take place on Saturday, October 18, at 11 a.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Rd., NE Atlanta, GA 30319. Burial will follow with a graveside service in Dallas, Texas. The family wishes to thank the staff of Sunrise of Buckhead for their excellent care and for creating a sense of home for Carolyn, Visiting Nurse Health System hospice for their compassionate care during Carolyn’s final week of life, and the staff of H.M. Patterson & Son for their professionalism and kindness during this difficult time.
