

He was born on September 16, 1912 in Newark, NJ and moved to Atlanta as a young boy. After attending Boys High, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1936 with an MS in Civil Engineering. He worked with the Georgia State Department of Transportation and later with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, retiring in 1977. Demetrius’ life was notable for the remarkable love, energy and vitality he brought to every day he lived. He loved life and taught others to embrace life as well. He was happily engaged with family and friends even as he celebrated his 100th birthday. He is preceded in death by his five siblings, George Papageorge, Evangeline Papageorge, Euripides Papageorge, Antigone (Ann) Woodward, and Calomira Canaris. His brother John Papageorge and his loving daughters, Maria Artemis and Lainey Papageorge survive him as do his four wonderful grandchildren, Peter Sawyer, Orion Hanson, Alex and Zoe Van Nostrand, and two great grandchildren, Raina and Paul Sawyer. His first wife and mother of Maria and Lainey, Irene Phrydas Papageorge and his second wife Chrysanthe Demetry Papageorge preceded him in death. He leaves a large extended family including stepchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held on August 16th at 11:00 AM at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Clairmont Rd in Atlanta. All are welcome to the interment at Arlington Cemetery and the reception afterwards in the Church hall. On Thursday August 15th, there will be a visitation with the family at H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill from 5:00 to 8:00 PM with prayer services at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Demetrius’ memory to either Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., Atlanta, GA 30319 or the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2500 Clairmont Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.
