Edwin Durham Schane, Jr., a lifelong resident of Atlanta, died May 9, 2011, following several years of declining health. He was born June 7, 1928, to Marion Richardson Schane and Edwin Durham Schane, also of Atlanta. He graduated from North Fulton High School and Emory University, where he majored in physics. He served in the United States Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty during the Korean War. He graduated from the Emory School of Law and, after having passed the Georgia Bar examination during his second year of law school, practiced law in Atlanta until the year 2000. Durham was always interested in physical fitness so worked out in the gym regularly, swam, water skied, and became an avid runner, completing 23 consecutive Peachtree Road Races and several marathons. He was interested in photography, astronomy, languages, riding his motorcycle, and flying his airplane. His “grand passion” was listening to and appreciating classical music. He was known for his intelligence, wit, unflagging friendship and, most of all, his integrity. He was an absolutely honorable man who often went to great lengths to help others. Durham is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Catherine (Katie) Shearer Schane. Additional survivors are his cousins Robert Bell and wife Betty Ann of Atlanta, GA; Graham Bell and wife Jane of Griffin, GA; and Dr. Augustus Sharp of Jacksonville, FL. He will also be lovingly remembered by Katie’s brother and sister-in-law Cy and Nancy Shearer of Gainesville, VA; her nephew Lt. Colonel Robert Shearer, niece by marriage Luisa, and their son, Will, of Monterey, CA; as well as by her niece Susan Shearer Beckworth, nephew by marriage Andy, and their children, Christopher and Lauren, of Haymarket, VA. The family would especially like to thank Mrs. Pamela Crowley and Mrs. JoAnn Stamps who gave him loving care for the past three years, and Mr.William Kirkham who also gave him excellent care recently. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 11:00 in the chapel at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery in Sandy Springs (201 Mt. Vernon Rd.). Interment will follow immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to radio station WABE for classical music programming, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, or any animal rescue organization or storm relief effort.
